Missions

The XCP-ng team develops and maintains the Xen hypervisor and Linux kernel present in our virtualization platform. Our main focus is security and performance, while keeping our excellent reliability. We are doing research and development in numerous areas, like VM memory encryption, porting Xen to other CPU architectures, or XCP-ng to other platforms, secure boot and so on. Our roadmap is visible here. Vates is looking for an experienced low-level developer with Linux Kernel or hypervisor experience for our XCP-ng team. As part of the team, you'll have the chance to generate significant impact on our systems running on thousands of machines all around the world. If you are passionate about virtualization with a deep technical knowledge, this is the place to shine:
  • You'll work directly with experienced Xen developers at Vates, but also with the very skilled Xen community to upstream your work and/or review upstream contributions
  • You'll improve both Xen but also components used around it, like Qemu and the Linux kernel itself (used in the Dom0), or even in the guest operating system (PV drivers)
  • Your work will focus on new features, performance and reliability improvements for server workloads. You'll be working on key areas of Xen and Linux

Qualifications

  • BS in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent work experience
  • Several years of experience working on the Linux Kernel
  • Strong skills in C programming
  • Proficient in at least one CPU architecture such as x86 or ARM
  • Direct experience with Linux kernel and virtualization development

Our Company

Vates is a French software company specializing in Open Source and virtualization with a deep commitment to open, collaborative development. Our main projects, Xen Orchestra and XCP-ng, span the full virtualization stack—from the hypervisor (Xen) and virtualization platform (XCP-ng) to management and VM backups (Xen Orchestra). Our team works across multiple countries, fully embracing remote work with transparent workflows and accessible communication channels. At Vates, we are driven by a strong, people-first culture that values benevolence, inclusivity, and a horizontal structure. Every member is empowered to contribute ideas, make decisions, and grow with the company. Our open-source model is core to everything we do, not just in our code, which is available on GitHub and GitLab, but in our collaborative approach with the community. We believe in "upstream first," dedicating our expertise and resources to support and advance foundational projects like Xen, and helping contributors of all levels join us on this journey.
